Compliance Overview

What is compliance?

Compliance is adhering to the requirements of laws, industry and organisational standards and codes, principles of good governance and accepted community and ethical standards - AS3806-2006 Compliance Programs.

Compliance obligations at UNSW

The University operates in a complex environment of Commonwealth and State laws, regulations and industry standards, all closely monitored by government departments and agencies.  The penalties for non-compliance with these laws and regulations can be severe and may be applied both to the University and individual employees.  It is therefore essential that a culture of compliance be promoted within the University, emphasising personal accountability and ethical conduct.

Most employees will be generally aware of the policies and procedures developed by the University, however will not have an appreciation of the many legal compliance obligations imposed on the University.  This website is designed to help staff understand their ethical and legal obligations, to educate employees about key compliance issues and to provide information and resources designed to ensure the University manages its legal compliance obligations.

The key to success in managing our legal obligations is individual effort by all employees.  A culture must be developed whereby behaviours that support compliance are encouraged and behaviours that compromise compliance are not tolerated.
